This session will explore the role of networks in the context of responsible innovation. Responsible innovation is defined as a transparent and interactive process in which societal actors and innovators are mutually responsive to each other regarding the ethical acceptability, sustainability, and societal desirability of the innovation process and its products. Responsible innovation aims for firms to leverage their (stakeholder) networks to address grand societal challenges. It is argued that certain firms, such as family-owned businesses, can be pioneers in pursuing responsible innovation due to their emphasis on non-economic goals, their embeddedness in society, and their close networks. We will discuss potential areas for future research on the role of networks in responsible innovation, including theoretical opportunities and implications for research design.
